Federal Landscape Changes

Our community is reeling from the changes in the federal landscape. They have been more swift and severe than ever before. We’re hearing from many nonprofit leaders that they are whiplashed. They have had to pivot to reviewing plans, revising budgets, and changing materials – all of which are a distraction that pulls precious time and resources.

Here’s what we expect to happen:

We’re keeping an eye on Congress’s budget reconciliation process. It will be telling in terms of how funding will be cut and shifted to align with the Trump administration’s priorities.

We expect more federal agencies to terminate positions, which will likely dirsupt and delay response times.

We’ll probably receive new guidance on language, terminology, compliance, and priorities. Federal agencies may request applicants to revise proposals that were submitted earlier this year.

We hope that funding opportunities will be released or re-posted this spring.

Here’s what you can do, inspired by some of our clients’ leaders:

Continue conversations with your board and staff about how to adjust.

Listen deeply and show up for each other. Many people are feeling anxious and attacked, and expressing concern and support is vital.

Consider how you can tell your story differently. Your mission and focus may not change, but how can you situate your nonprofit’s story adapt to this radical new context?

Review budget projections and adjust to new scenarios.

Diversify your funding and look for ways to sustain operations through lines of credit, early drawdowns, and reserves.

Remember that successful fundraising hinges on relationships. Pick up the phone, go to meetings, share updates, and be in community.

Continue to contact elected officials and let them know the impacts on your nonprofit and the people you serve.

We will get through this difficult time together. RIC is here for you!

Key Takeaways from CCI meeting

Our friends at the Center for Civic Innovation hosted a meeting in February to discuss how the nonprofit sector and philanthropy can respond to the federal changes. Some of the key takeaways were:

The time for change is now. We have been advocating for change for decades, and now the crisis is upon us.

We need to approach philanthropy as coalitions and not work in silos.

There are many misconceptions about 501(c)(3) nonprofits, and we need to work together and be loud about what our sector does to help people and communities.

Funders were urged to think about how they can support the sector both privately and publicly.
