In the wake of the OMB memos issued on January 27 and 28, we have been closely following the White House’s announcements and nonprofits’ attempts to seek clarification and fight back. As of January 31, the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island has issued a temporary restraining order that gives a reprieve for recipients and applicants for federal funding. You can read the full text here.
- Along with other grant professionals, we have been advising nonprofits to read their grant agreements, discuss contingency plans with their board, take steps to diversify funding and reach out to donors where possible, and keep moving forward with applications and post-award grant management unless they receive notice from a federal funding agency advising of changes or other steps to be taken. In addition, here are some actions you can take to advocate for the importance of federal funding for your work and that of the sector as a whole:
- Help the National Council of Nonprofits collect stories on how the recent executive orders and/or the OMB memo on freezing federal funding are impacting the work and communities that nonprofits serve: https://bit.ly/3PTAcVO
- Write to your elected officials and let them know the same. Georgia’s 5th district Representative, Nikema Williams, is inviting her constituents to complete this form to share their story.
- Visit your Congressperson and Senators’ websites to see if they are collecting stories, but even if they do not have something similar, we still encourage you to contact them and let them know about the impacts on your agency.
