Message From the President & CEO
It’s official – spring is here, and Q2 is fast approaching. We’re plunging into this season of renewal with gusto.
Over the weekend, we announced some powerful changes to the way that we serve nonprofits. We released new service packages that are designed to help you overcome grant-seeking challenges with ample support, expert guidance, and laser-focused strategies.
We’re also hosting a live Ask Me Anything About Grants session on April 7 (12–1 PM ET). Bring your real questions about strategy, funding realities, and navigating the current grant landscape. Register here.
In the meantime, we’re still keeping an eye on government and philanthropic grant trends. Read below for our insights, recommended reading, and some calls to action. Remember, we can and must advocate for our sector, and using our voice is one of the most important ways to speak out against injustice.
Let me know what you think as we wrap up the first quarter of 2026 and head into a new season. What does your nonprofit need? We are here to help share intel, resources, and support, so don’t hesitate to reach out.
In solidarity,
Betty

Trend Watch
President Trump signed an executive order (EO) on March 16, “Establishing The Task Force to Eliminate Fraud.” The EO claims without evidence that “illegal aliens, criminals, foreign gangs, bureaucrats, State and local officials, non-governmental organizations, and ineligible providers exploit” federal safety net programs, resulting in widespread fraud, waste, and abuse. Among other actions purported to reduce and identify fraud, the Internal Revenue Service will soon launch investigations into the tax-exempt status of nonprofits involved in the alleged fraud. Additionally, The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) are forming a new initiative to investigate nonprofits over suspected possible links to domestic terrorism. (National Council on Nonprofits, March 23, 2026).
Nonprofits Estimated to Lose $5.7 Billion Annually in Charitable Donations. A new report suggests that tax provisions signed into law in 2025 will reduce charitable giving to nonprofits by $5.7 billion annually. The report analyzed three tax provisions impacting nonprofits: the creation of a new universal charitable deduction for taxpayers who do not itemize their deductions; a new 35% cap and 0.5% floor on individual itemizers; and a new 1% floor on corporate giving. While the universal deduction is expected to increase resources for nonprofits, the other provisions will likely decrease charitable giving. The overall decline in resources comes as many nonprofits struggle to maintain services and staff due to dramatic cuts in federal funding. (National Council on Nonprofits, March 23, 2026).
Take Action
Help us understand the current grant landscape better by completing this survey from GrantStation. It’s due March 31, so make sure to complete it before the end of the month! The past year has drastically changed the grant landscape, but nonprofits experience it differently. Your nonprofit’s grant-seeking experience probably varies based on your budget size, mission, geographic location, communities served…you get the picture. You can help our sector understand these experiences, identify trends, and support one another during these volatile times, when many nonprofits are struggling to survive. Take the survey by March 31.
A proposed regulation by the General Services Administration (GSA) would substantively add to organization requirements for SAM.gov certification and renewal. At a minimum, these new requirements would apply to nonprofits, school districts, and municipalities, and may also apply to federal contractors. The new requirements address “illegal DEI,” immigration, and “support for terrorism,” and may be in conflict with organization missions, state laws, and other federal laws and regulations. The public comment period on the proposed regulation is open now through March 30. You can submit comments to GSA. We recommend the National Council on Nonprofits’ Comment Guide for assistance in drafting comments. You can also sign onto a national letter by the National Council of Nonprofits and Legal Defense Fund (also by March 30).
